SSAB and Finnish construction company Nordec have signed a significant cooperation agreement for the supply of fossil-free steel. The deal ensures that Nordec will gain access to SSAB’s fossil-free steel for use in building frames, facades and bridges among other applications.
SSAB aims to be the first company to bring fossil-free steel to the market in 2026. For its part, Nordec is targeting major reductions in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030.
– As a leading player, it is extremely important for us that investments related to the production of fossil-free steel move forward. Collaboration with SSAB promotes our green transition strategy and emission reduction targets, said Kalle Luoto, CEO of Nordec Group.
Under the agreement, SSAB will initially supply small volumes of fossil-free steel for Nordec’s pilot projects. As production ramps up, deliveries will expand to larger quantities.
– We are proud to partner with Nordec in realizing fossil-free steel construction. Replacing conventional steel with fossil-free steel allows the construction industry to significantly reduce its carbon footprint, said Martin Pei, Executive Vice President and Head of SSAB Special Steels Division.
The collaboration is an important step for both companies in the transition towards more sustainable construction and a fossil-free future for the steel industry. Fossil-free steel can reduce emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional blast furnace steelmaking.
