Skanska has secured a Phase 1 contract with Trafikverket to build Sweden's first triangular lock in Lilla Edet, replacing a century-old structure with an innovative design that reduces environmental impact.
Skanska has signed a Phase 1 contract with Trafikverket for a new lock in Lilla Edet. The agreement uses early contractor involvement (TEM) methodology.
The new lock will replace the existing structure in Trollhälle canal. The current lock is over 100 years old. Replacement has become necessary due to age and capacity constraints.
The design breaks new ground in Sweden. The lock will be the country’s first triangular-shaped structure. This innovative geometry offers several advantages over conventional designs.
The triangular shape requires less land than traditional rectangular locks. Consequently, the project minimizes environmental impact. It also reduces the volume of material requiring excavation and handling.
Safety improvements represent another key benefit. The triangular design enhances safety during lock operations. This addresses ongoing concerns about navigational efficiency.
Skanska will handle both planning and design work. The company collaborates with Trafikverket throughout the process. This phase will last approximately 1.5 years.
The project scope includes concrete structures for lock heads and chambers. Additionally, it encompasses extensive support structures and earthworks. Teams will adapt slopes and fairways to accommodate the new lock position. The work also includes stability-improvement measures.
Phase 2 will trigger through an option mechanism. At that point, parties will sign a new contract for the construction phase. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027.
