Skanska and Swedish cleantech company Cemvision are teaming up to develop and scale a new low-carbon cement that could slash emissions from one of construction’s biggest climate culprits.
The partnership will combine Skanska’s expertise in low-impact building solutions with Cemvision’s circular cement technology. Their goal is to create a next-generation cement with up to 95% lower carbon footprint than traditional Portland cement, without sacrificing performance.
“Cemvision’s innovative technology can transform the cement value chain and drive real sustainability impact,” said Sara Löfgren, Head of Skanska Concrete Region. “This partnership also helps broaden the market for low-carbon binders, improving resilience.”
Cemvision’s cement relies on a circular production process using industrial by-products instead of newly-extracted limestone. Electrified manufacturing processes also drastically cut energy use and emissions.
“Skanska’s climate leadership makes them an ideal partner to scale our technology as demand for circular, low-carbon materials grows,” noted Cemvision CEO Oscar Hållén.
The companies signed a letter of intent, with pilot projects using Cemvision’s greener cement planned soon. It paves the way for Skanska to secure supply through a future offtake agreement.
As reducing embodied carbon becomes crucial, the Skanska-Cemvision partnership aims to reinvent one of construction’s most emissions-intensive materials into an eco-friendly building block.
