In an extraordinary board meeting, Liseberg’s board has decided that their water park Oceana will be rebuilt after the devastating fire earlier this year.
The water park sustained extensive damage in a fire in February. It has now been cleared and sanitized. Liseberg has prepared decision support materials for the board regarding Oceana’s future. The company’s investigations show it is more economical to complete Oceana than to demolish it and start an alternative project.
“We now feel we have sufficient knowledge to make a decision on rebuilding Oceana, as well as phase 1 of the completion. Based on the scenarios Liseberg has prepared, there is really no alternative to a rebuild. This applies both to Liseberg as a business and Gothenburg as a visitor destination,” says Kurt Eliasson, Chairman of Liseberg’s board.
The starting point is that Oceana will be rebuilt according to the same main principles as the original project. However, Liseberg will change the technology for the larger water attractions. And although no deficiencies in Oceana’s fire protection have been identified yet, some changes may be made here as well, especially during construction.
Several investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. The police and Accident Investigation Authority’s reports will be presented in spring 2025. Until the cause is finally established and clarity is reached on the conditions for compensation, the project needs bridge financing.
