Nobel Center design unveiled after donation boost

Stockholm’s new Nobel Center will open in 2031 following a massive donation. The first design images show a landmark building at Slussen. Total construction costs reach 2.5 billion kronor.

The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has raised its donation to the Nobel Center project by 1.1 billion kronor (€100 million). Total foundation funding now reaches 2.3 billion kronor. Simultaneously, the Nobel Foundation unveiled initial renderings for the Slussen facility.

Total project costs are estimated at 2.5 billion kronor (€220 million). The Nobel Foundation will finance 200 million kronor while the Wallenberg Foundation covers the balance.

Nobel Center to open in 2031

The facility will function as the Nobel Prize’s primary hub in Stockholm. The facility will house exhibitions, educational programming, and public engagement spaces.

– Nobel Center will be a public landmark building of the highest architectural quality, says Torleif Falk, Stockholm’s city architect.

Falk positions the development among Stockholm’s defining architectural assets, including the Royal Palace, Opera House, and City Hall.

The Nobel Foundation will file for building permits on January 16. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with completion scheduled for 2031. The timeline marks a two-year extension from initial projections.
