Major construction projects halted

The bankruptcy creates uncertainty about growth. The real estate company is therefore canceling tenders for a total of 770 homes.

Skebo is canceling tenders for four planned construction projects in Skellefteå: Voltern, Astern, Nattkvarteret, and Väverskan.

This involves a total of 350 apartments and 420 student housing units. The decision is based on Northvolt’s bankruptcy at the beginning of the year creating uncertainty about population growth.

Skebo already has 200 vacant apartments today and another 6,000 homes in production. This corresponds to housing for between 1,500 and 2,000 residents in the coming years. Therefore, the company assesses that it has a good buffer until growth in the city returns.

“We and other actors in Skellefteå have a buffer for growth today, which gives us room to make wise decisions. It also means we can quickly resume tenders when the need arises,” says Harriet Classon, chairwoman of Skebo.

“We are prepared”

American company Lyten, which bought Northvolt’s bankruptcy estate, has announced that it wants to resume production at the battery factory in Skellefteå. The future need for housing remains, but the timing is uncertain.

At the same time, the building permit applications remain and tenders can be published again after six months.

“We work long-term to meet Skellefteå’s housing needs and feel that we are prepared when growth returns,” says Harriet Classon.
