The Swedish Transport Administration is receiving a historically high sum to spend on infrastructure over the next twelve years.
The Swedish Transport Administration will receive SEK 1,171 billion (€102 billion) to spend on infrastructure over the next twelve years. That’s SEK 200 billion (€17 billion) more than the current plan.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Director-General Roberto Maiorana and Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson (Christian Democrats) outlined how the funds will be allocated.
Around SEK 500 billion (€43 billion) will go towards upgrading railways and roads in dire need of renovation.
“This is a substantial investment that we’re presenting in today’s proposed national plan. It gives us the opportunity to catch up on the many years of deferred maintenance on our roads. And a comprehensive investment is being made in the railway network. At the same time, we can strengthen total defense and improve climate adaptation,” says the Transport Administration’s Director-General Roberto Maiorana.
If everything goes according to plan, the agency estimates that the maintenance backlog will be eliminated by 2037 for the road network and 2050 for the railway network.
Other investments include a new interchange on the E4 motorway north of Stockholm, a new icebreaker, and noise mitigation measures on the Söderåsen Line in Skåne.
The national plan will now be sent out for consultation to relevant authorities. Comments will be submitted to the government, which is then expected to finalize the plan during spring 2026.
