A major challenge awaits as contractors begin work on the 200-meter bridge across Motala Ström. With 60 meters down to bedrock, the foundation work requires precision and time.
A 200-meter bascule bridge will carry traffic across Motala Ström. Work has now begun on what is described as the centerpiece of the Johannisborg Connection, reports Norrköpings Tidningar.
– This is a large and complex structure we’re building in a very challenging location. At the same time, I would say this bridge will be the crown jewel of the entire project, project manager Erik Strand tells the newspaper.
Ground reinforcement work is currently underway, followed by pile driving.
– It takes time to do this properly. In the middle of the stream, it’s 60 meters down to bedrock. We’re building a large and heavy structure that must be properly anchored here, as it will carry extremely heavy loads. It’s a major challenge and it’s crucial that we get the foundation right, says Erik Strand.
The most recent cost estimate for the bridge stands at approximately €85 million.
– That’s a lot of money. So there’s tremendous responsibility on our shoulders. That’s why we’re working very actively, both to protect the environment and to save money from our treasury, Erik Strand tells NT.
The bridge construction is part of the second of five phases in the Johannisborg Connection. The phase also includes a two-kilometer ring road.
Phase two is expected to be completed in 2029.
