NCC has completed the first two phases of a flood barrier protecting the Falsterbo peninsula in southern Sweden from rising sea levels. The contract, awarded by Vellinge Municipality, now continues with two further phases.
The barrier will protect municipal infrastructure, cultural heritage sites and coastal properties from future storm surges.
“Like many of Sweden’s coastal communities, the Falsterbo peninsula is at risk of flooding. We are building this barrier to protect existing infrastructure and the local community against future high water levels. Our collaboration with NCC has worked well during the first two phases. We look forward to continuing the work together,” says Anders Purcell, Project Manager at Vellinge Municipality.
The contract covers nine kilometres of flood protection. Half will be earth embankments covered with existing vegetation. The other half will be clad sheet piling. The design will vary along the route to blend in with the landscape. Works will be timed around nearby golf courses. The project must also protect amphibians and nesting birds.
Eleonore Andersson, Business Manager at NCC Infrastructure, says:
“The Falsterbo flood barrier is a prestigious project for NCC. Thanks to our strong partnership with Vellinge Municipality and the experience gained during the earlier phases, we have laid solid foundations for a successful project. Our main focus now is efficient earthworks and materials management in an area of high natural value and sensitive wildlife.”
Work on the next phases will begin in January 2027.
