The new building, named “Samklang” (Harmony), will house a new cultural center, the Arctic Philharmonic, and the Northern Norwegian Art Museum. This aims to integrate cultural life with the city center, according to the architects in a press release.
“The building will lie in a protective shell, and its luminosity will stand out during the long dark periods. The lobby will sit at the heart of the structure, acting as the glue binding all functions together. By combining music, performing arts, and an art museum, we lay the foundation for a cultural quarter brimming with unique experiences. These two independent cultural institutions will harmonize to create a new landmark in the Arctic city,” says Thomas Lindgård Fagernes, Partner and Architect at Nordic Office of Architecture.
With “Samklang”, the architects seek to seamlessly integrate the users and their needs into a cohesive structure, with a central core spanning all floors to ensure coherent communication, efficient logistics, and optimal utilization of the site – with a third room elegantly distributing audiences and visitors across all levels. The compact volume, with its limited façade area, is a significant advantage from a sustainability perspective. The combined building will not only strengthen both institutions but provide a solid basis for extensive shared use and a robust starting point for developing additional functions within the block.
“The architectural design is inspired by the surroundings and nature, seamlessly integrating with the environment. It stands proudly at the heart of the city, embodying the spirit of Tromsø. This building connects the area to the city and transforms the Mack site into a vibrant urban space. It plays a crucial role in Tromsø’s ongoing development and enhances the cityscape,” says Partner and Architect at ALA Architects, Juho Grönholm.
In the concert hall, the Norwegian/Finnish team blends modern design with optimal functionality. The hall’s versatility allows it to seamlessly transform from an orchestra venue into a theater. The chamber hall, with its spectacular views and flexible technical and acoustic design, is perfect for a range of genres and events. It includes a lobby that can be used for intimate performances and larger gatherings such as conferences and banquets.
The project team comprises the Nordic Office of Architecture in collaboration with ALA Architects, Kahle Acoustics, Kullblå, Casson Mann, and Norconsult.
