Webuild wins contract for Riyadh metro extension

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has awarded a major metro extension contract to Webuild and its partners. The project will add 8.4 km to the Red Line. Construction includes five new stations and tunnel systems.

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has awarded the Riyadh Metro Red Line extension contract to the Webuild-led consortium. The consortium includes India’s L&T, Saudi Arabia’s NESMA and France’s ALSTOM.

The project covers design and construction of an 8.4 km driverless metro line. Of this, 1.3 km will be on viaduct while 7.1 km will run through tunnels. Moreover, it includes five stations, three underground, and signaling systems.

Extension links metro to UNESCO heritage site

The Red Line extension is part of the world’s longest driverless metro network. The new section will integrate with the six driverless lines launched in Riyadh last December, covering 176 km total.

The extension will add two metro stations to King Saud University.

Furthermore, it will connect the existing Red Line with Diriyah, Saudi Arabia’s first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Webuild has built more than 890 km of metro lines globally. The Group has been present in Saudi Arabia since 1966 and is working on several projects in Riyadh.
