Volvo Construction Equipment made a splash at bauma 2025 today by unveiling its first battery-electric articulated hauler – the electric versions of the A30 and A40 models.
During the world premiere, Volvo CE’s CEO Melker Jernberg revealed an A30 hauler retrofitted with dual electric motors, a reduction gear, and battery packs, replacing the diesel engine while maintaining the same proven design.
“We’ve taken the A30 and swapped out the diesel for an electric driveline, but it’s essentially the same machine as the conventional version. Our aim was to make the electric and diesel variants as identical as possible to streamline manufacturing, service, and parts,” explained Malin Fröberg, Chief Project Manager for Volvo’s electric hauler development.
The battery-electric haulers feature energy recuperation capability, recharging the batteries when traveling downhill with a load to extend runtime between charges, which is initially around 4.5 hours.
Volvo recommends using at least a 350kW charging station to fully replenish the batteries in about an hour.
Maintaining performance parity with diesel models was a key priority. “We wanted no compromises – it has the same top speed, and operators familiar with the diesel version will feel right at home,” said Fröberg.
Volvo is offering site-analysis support to maximize the electric haulers’ efficiency, using existing machine data to plan optimal vehicle routing, fleet size, and charge point placement.
Initial deliveries of the battery-powered A30 and A40 haulers to select customers will begin in 2026, with global availability across all Volvo CE markets projected for 2028.
