A fatal tunnel collapse has halted work at the Canyon Tunnel Project in Stanislaus County, California. One worker died and another was injured when the tunnel gave way around 200 feet from the entrance.
One person has died and another was injured after a tunnel collapsed at a construction site in Stanislaus County, California, CBS reports.
The collapse occurred just before 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the Canyon Tunnel Project site, northeast of Knights Ferry. Two workers were trapped when the tunnel collapsed around 200 feet from the entrance.
One worker was found outside the tunnel with minor to moderate injuries. The second worker, a 35-year-old woman, was found dead inside the tunnel.
All work at the site has been suspended. The cause of the collapse is not yet known.
The Canyon Tunnel Project is a joint effort between the Oakdale Irrigation District and the South San Joaquin Irrigation District, aimed at bypassing an unstable section of canal downstream from Goodwin Dam.
