The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has informed Equinor’s subsidiary Empire Offshore Wind LLC that the stop order for the Empire Wind project has been lifted. Construction on the massive project can now continue.
“We are pleased to resume construction on Empire Wind, an energy project that supports local businesses and creates jobs,” says Anders Opedal, CEO of Equinor ASA.
“I want to thank President Trump for finding a solution that saves thousands of jobs and lays the foundation for further investments in industrial projects in the US…” Opedal said, expressing gratitude to NY officials and Congress members for their support.
The stop order was issued on April 16th, 2025. After dialogue with authorities, it has now been lifted, allowing construction activities to restart.
“This project delivers on the ambitions of the US and New York by realizing an important new power source for the region. At the same time, Empire Wind is creating several thousand new jobs across the country,” said Molly Morris, head of Equinor’s US renewable energy unit.
Equinor will provide an updated assessment of project economics in Q2. The goal is to conduct planned 2025 offshore installation activities to reach commercial operation in 2027.
The US is a core area for Equinor, with around $60 billion invested in energy projects since the early 2000s, including increasing focus on renewables.
