The opening of Cambridge South station has been delayed until June 2026 after a subcontractor went into administration during critical electrical and mechanical installation works, Network Rail has confirmed.
Network Rail has postponed the opening of Cambridge South station until June 2026 after a subcontractor entered administration while installing electrical and mechanical systems at the site.
The project was already running behind schedule, with the opening date having previously slipped from December 2025 to early 2026. Network Rail has cited the need for additional engineering work as another factor contributing to the latest delay.
Located at the city’s biomedical campus, which houses 23,000 employees, the new station is projected to serve 1.8 million passengers per year once operational.
Liberal Democrat councillor Olaf Haulk described the delay as “a major disappointment,” according to the BBC.
“More than a million journeys will now be made by car instead of train,” he added.
Network Rail stated it is working closely with the main contractor to bring in a replacement subcontractor and reallocate resources in an effort to minimize further delays and manage outstanding project risks.
The total cost of Cambridge South is forecast to reach £100 million.
