Construction of the world’s largest stadium began just nine months ago, and the work, which continues around the clock, is moving forward at a breakneck pace. The stadium is now set to open as early as July 2027, a year ahead of the original plan.

By July of next year, Vietnam could boast the world’s largest stadium. That is when VinFast Trong Dong Stadium, with a capacity of 135,000 spectators, will open. This is a year ahead of its original timeline.

The stadium is designed after a traditional Vietnamese bronze drum and will have a circular, gold-toned roof with a diameter of 408 meters (about 1,340 feet).

The retractable roof will also set a record as the largest of its kind in the world. Steel columns 80 meters (about 260 feet) tall, with a combined weight of more than 15,000 metric tons, will lift the steel arch modules that form the dome.

Construction began nine months ago, and work continues 24/7. The concrete frame will be finished in December of this year. After that, the electrical systems and interiors will be installed. The spectacular roof will be in place by May 2027.

The stadium will be the crown jewel of the massive Olympic Sports City project, which covers around 9,000 hectares (about 22,000 acres) on the outskirts of Hanoi. The total cost of the project will amount to around 381 billion Swedish kronor.

Vietnamese authorities now hope the new venue will make it possible to bid for hosting the FIFA World Cup or the Olympic Games.
