Skanska is systematically deconstructing a concrete canopy structure at Five Points Station while keeping the underground facility operational, launching the first phase of a $230 million renovation.

Skanska USA Building has commenced the “surgical deconstruction” of a concrete canopy at MARTA’s Five Points Station in Atlanta.

The existing structure, comprising pre-stressed concrete beams, post-tension cables, hollow-core slabs, glazing and columns, must be systematically dismantled while the underground station continues serving passengers.

The new design will feature three pedestrian entrances beneath a 32,000-square-foot mass timber canopy, creating a more open-concept layout.

The canopy removal marks the first phase of a broader $230 million reimagining of the 144,400-square-foot transit hub into what officials describe as a “vibrant city center” aimed at improving connectivity, amenities and safety.

Five Points Station is the largest and busiest station in the MARTA system, serving as the central transfer point for all rail lines in Atlanta.

“We’re excited to contribute to the revitalization of the Five Points Station as MARTA and the city work to create a more dynamic urban core in downtown Atlanta,” said Matt Frey, executive vice president and general manager for Skanska USA Building’s Atlanta operations.

Skanska expects to complete deconstruction by 2027 and is positioned to serve as contractor on subsequent phases, which will incorporate community spaces, public art and urban agriculture.
