U.S. construction added 19,000 jobs in September, but experts warn the recovery masks underlying weakness with just 2,000 positions added since March.

September’s addition of 19,000 construction jobs has lifted U.S. contractor confidence, though experts say sustained growth remains unclear.

Total U.S. employment rose 119,000 jobs in September, according to delayed Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Construction industry employment increased 38,000 jobs, or 0.5%, over the past year.

“Construction employment increased in September, ending a three-month decline,” said Anirban Basu, chief economist at Associated Builders and Contractors. “Despite the rebound, the industry has added just 2,000 jobs since March.”

Nonresidential construction led gains with 16,300 positions. Specialty trade contractors added 11,000 jobs, while heavy and civil engineering firms added 4,900.

U.S. unemployment rose to 4.4% from 4.3% in August. Construction unemployment reached 3.8%.

Half of ABC members expect staff growth over the next six months, with under 12% anticipating cuts. Hourly earnings for nonsupervisory workers increased 4% year-over-year to $37.64.

“Despite significant uncertainties, construction firms remain optimistic,” said AGC CEO Jeffrey D. Shoaff. “Sustaining momentum requires clarity on tariff levels, stable materials prices and a stronger workforce.”
