Skanska, AMF Fastigheter and Heidelberg Materials are joining forces to reduce the climate impact of construction.

The partners in the partnership are now casting Signalhuset in Marievik, Stockholm, using Skanska Husbetong 80. The concrete is made with Heidelberg Materials’ CCS-based cement evoZero, supplied from the company’s cement plant in Brevik, Norway.

“To reduce the climate impact of construction, we need to collaborate across the entire industry and explore several pathways away from conventional concrete. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, which is why we are testing and evaluating different alternatives. The concrete in Signalhuset is one of them, and an important example of what we can achieve when client, contractor and material supplier drive development together,” says Sara Löfgren, Regional Manager at Skanska Sweden.

Capturing emissions at source

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) means that emissions from cement production are captured using amine technology. Then they are transported to a permanent storage site. The cement has an 85 per cent lower climate impact than the industry reference in Svensk Betong’s guidelines.

Magnus Ohlsson, CEO of Heidelberg Materials Cement Sweden, says:

“The development of CCS and evoZero is a technological leap that we have been working towards for a long time. For new technology to make a difference, you need partners who share the ambition to drive progress. That is why we are delighted to contribute, together with AMF Fastigheter and Skanska, to Marievik and Signalhuset.”

“If the construction and property sector is to succeed in the climate transition, we need to collaborate and put new solutions into practice. In Marievik, we are working with partners who share our ambition to reduce the climate impact of construction. We are showing what is already possible today,” says Kenneth Öberg, Project Manager at AMF Fastigheter.
