Sweden’s construction giants — ranked

Which main contractors have the biggest footprint on Sweden’s construction market right now? Byggfakta has the answer in its latest ranking, covering new builds, extensions and renovations.

Swedish construction giant Peab tops the list of the country’s most active main contractors, according to a new report from Byggfakta covering actual construction starts over the past 12 months.

Peab leads across all project segments — new builds, extensions, renovations and refurbishments — both in terms of number of projects and estimated construction cost. NCC and Skanska follow in second and third place respectively, with NCC and Skanska recording nearly identical project counts but NCC carrying a higher estimated construction cost per project.

A contributing factor to Peab and NCC’s strong positions is their involvement in SSAB’s massive steelworks project in Luleå, which alone accounts for several billion kronor in estimated construction cost. However, both companies would have retained their top positions even without those contracts.

The big three dominate across most individual segments too, including commercial and civil construction. The one exception is the residential segment, where Consto breaks into third place behind Peab and Skanska.
