Ecodatacenter expands in Sweden with new site

Ecodatacenter is set to build a new data centre in Smedjebacken, Dalarna, after acquiring 52 hectares of industrial land. The project is expected to create several hundred construction jobs and up to 150 permanent positions.

Ecodatacenter has secured 52 hectares of industrial land in Röbacken, Smedjebacken, where it plans to build its third data centre in the Dalarna region. The first facility is set to open in 2029.

The company, which already operates data centres in Falun and Borlänge, chose Smedjebacken for its access to renewable electricity from hydropower and wind, with additional solar parks and battery storage planned for the area. Ecodatacenter will also work with local stakeholders and the municipality to strengthen regional electricity production and develop projects to recover waste heat from the facility.

Construction is expected to begin once building permits and environmental approvals are in place in 2027.

“We have our roots in Dalarna, and being able to continue growing in the region is very important to us. We have had many good discussions with Smedjebacken since 2019 and are now taking the next step,” says Peter Michelson, CEO of Ecodatacenter.

The establishment is expected to create between 125 and 150 permanent jobs once operational, with several hundred jobs anticipated during the construction phase.

“Getting an establishment of this size to Smedjebacken means a great deal for the local labour market,” says Fredrik Rönning, chair of the municipal council.
