Hundreds of millions unpaid at Swedish steel plant site

Multiple contractors at Stegra’s Boden steel plant have gone unpaid since autumn. The Swedish company’s press chief says there may be disagreements about delivered quantities.

Several contractors have not received payment from Stegra for their work on the new steel plant in Boden, northern Sweden, according to SVT Norrbotten.

The unpaid amounts reportedly total hundreds of millions of kronor dating back to autumn. The payment delays have led to a gradual reduction in the workforce on site.

Karin Hallstan, press chief at Stegra, told SVT there could be several reasons for the unpaid invoices.

– There can be several reasons why invoices are not paid. One reason could be that there is disagreement about what has been delivered compared to the order in terms of quantity, she says.

No enforcement action taken

None of the contractors have taken their unpaid invoices to Sweden’s enforcement authority, Kronofogden. According to SVT’s sources, the companies believe pursuing enforcement action would increase the risk of not getting paid at all.
