T1 Energy has commenced construction on its G2 Austin facility with a planned investment of up to $425 million, marking a significant expansion of domestic solar manufacturing capacity.
T1 Energy announced today the start of construction on its G2 Austin solar cell manufacturing facility, with an expected investment of $400 million to $425 million in advanced US production capacity.
The facility’s first phase is expected to have an annual production capacity of 2.1 GW of high-efficiency TOPCon solar cells, with cell production commencing by the end of 2026. The initial build-out of G2 Austin is itself larger than the current total production capacity for silicon-based solar cells in the United States.
G2 Austin, which will span over 100 acres near Rockdale in Milam County, Texas, is expected to support up to 1,800 new jobs in advanced manufacturing.
“G2 Austin is a central element of our strategy to build an integrated US supply chain for polysilicon-based solar energy,” said T1 Chairman and CEO Dan Barcelo.
Solar cells produced at G2 Austin will be used in modules manufactured at the company’s G1 facility in Dallas. The second phase of G2 Austin is expected to reach 3.2 GW, with potential for further expansion if cell demand increases.
