Portuguese contractor lands €820M Mexico rail contract

Portuguese construction giant Mota-Engil has won an €820 million contract to build the second segment of a strategic railway connection in Mexico, consolidating its position as Europe’s largest railway infrastructure contractor.

The 29-month project will see Mota-Engil Mexico design and construct a 70.7-kilometer stretch between Apaseo el Grande and Irapuato, part of the Querétaro-Irapuato railway link. Combined with the first segment awarded last August, the company now controls the entire connection, a flagship project within Mexico’s National Railway Plan.

The contract with Mexico’s Secretaria de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes marks a significant expansion of Mota-Engil’s Mexican operations. The subsidiary has also recently secured additional railway infrastructure contracts worth approximately €200 million in the country.

The awards push Mota-Engil’s Mexican backlog to roughly €3.7 billion, representing a resumption of growth in a key Latin American market. The company’s strong pipeline reinforces its dominance in European railway construction as it continues expanding its international footprint.
