Swedish regulators have ordered Stegra to address fall protection failures at its steelworks site or face a one million kronor fine and a complete work stoppage.

Sweden’s Work Environment Authority is cracking down on safety violations at Stegra’s steelworks construction site. The authority has banned work at height until fall protection deficiencies are addressed, citing an immediate and serious risk of injury, NSD reports.

The authority requires the use of work platforms, safety railings or scaffolding. Railings must be at least one metre high and fitted with toe boards and intermediate rails.

Failure to comply carries a fine of one million Swedish kronor. The safety representative also has the authority to halt all work at height on the Stegra site entirely.

Stegra said it welcomes the inspection, as it helps identify areas for improvement in its preventive safety work. Subcontractors on the site received similar notices from the authority.
