Construction begins on historic €60 million investment

The spade has hit the ground. Work is now commencing on what will be a complete renewal involving extensive new construction and refurbishment.

One of Eon’s largest investments in northern Sweden is now getting underway. The energy giant is ploughing over EUR 60 million into a new regional grid station as well as new construction and refurbishment of power lines and distribution stations in the area.

“This is an extensive project with many important components, all necessary to future-proof the electricity supply and enable growth and new investments in both Jämtland and Västernorrland,” says Mats Tullgren, Regional Grid Manager at Eon.

The investment represents a complete renewal of the grid infrastructure in the area. The new regional grid station is being constructed in Kånkback/Vikbäcken and will replace an existing station in Hammarstrand. Simultaneously, lines from Hammarforsen to the new station are being rebuilt. Stations in Kälarne, Graninge, Bispgården and Sillre, among others, will also undergo refurbishment.

Building for decades to come

Large portions of today’s overhead lines will be replaced with underground cables for increased operational reliability and reduced vulnerability.

“By expanding capacity, we’re creating space for more customers to connect, which strengthens the region’s competitiveness and makes it possible to realise more industrial and climate projects. We’re not just building for today’s needs, but for decades to come,” says Mats Tullgren.

In total, Eon expects to invest EUR 2.3 billion during the period 2024 to 2027. It is the company’s largest grid investment in history.
