The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has announced the Sotra Link opening will be delayed. The road project was scheduled to open on June 1, 2027, but the highway will now open at the earliest in the fourth quarter of 2027.

According to Sotra Link Construction, the main reason is challenging ground conditions that have made it necessary to remove more rock than planned.

The project represents Norway’s largest road investment ever with a budget of 23.1 billion Norwegian kroner (€2 billion).

Challenging ground conditions

– We know that many have looked forward to the opening in June 2027 and we regret the delay, says project manager Lene Sælen Rivenes.

Sotra Link Construction has implemented measures to recover the delay. They say the new date depends on the acceleration measures. Moreover, it assumes that no further challenges arise.

Massive infrastructure investment

With 12.5 kilometers of tunnels, 22 bridges and viadducts, 19 underpasses, 14 kilometers of sidewalks and bicycle paths, and 9.4 kilometers of four-lane road, the Sotra Link becomes Norway’s largest road project ever. The investment framework totals 23.1 billion kroner.

The delayed opening affects one of the country’s most significant infrastructure developments. The road project aims to improve connectivity and reduce travel times in the region.
