Engineering News Record (ENR) has released its annual ranking of the 400 largest commercial contractors in the U.S. based on revenue. The top of the list remains largely the same, with minor changes at the top.
Turner Construction maintains the top spot as the largest U.S. contractor by revenue, according to trade publication Engineering News-Record’s ranking of the 400 largest commercial contractors for 2025.
The New York-based company reported revenue of $20.2 billion for 2024, an increase from the previous year’s $17.1 billion.
Bechtel reclaims second place Reston, Virginia-based Bechtel takes second place after reclaiming the position from Omaha, Nebraska-based Kiewit. The company increased from $12.9 billion to $15.9 billion in 2024.
Kiewit therefore ranks third with revenue of $14 billion for 2024, compared to $13.8 billion the previous year.
Despite record revenue of $600 billion and 7.9% growth in 2024, uncertainty prevails among the top 400 U.S. contractors, writes ENR, noting how contractors balance limited labor resources against rising construction costs and rapidly shifting project demands.
Behind the positive development, growing concerns are emerging, according to the journal. Cracks in consumer confidence are appearing as owners cancel some projects and pause others amid confusion over the Trump administration’s “America First” agenda.
“We are only a few months into the second term of the Trump administration, so it is probably a little premature to say what the downstream market impacts are of these policies,” says Keith Poettker, chairman and CEO of Poettker Construction Co., ranked No. 339 on ENR’s list, to the trade journal. Even so, he still believes the “long-term strategy” of America First will “create robust manufacturing growth expansion in the U.S. driven by both foreign direct investment and domestic manufacturing capital improvement expansion.”
ENR’s Top 400 list is an annual ranking of the largest American contractors, both public and private, based on construction revenue from the previous year.
