A seven-month metro shutdown is coming to Helsinki. The city is replacing the deteriorating Junatien bridge between Kalasatama and Sörnäinen stations at a cost of up to €107 million.
Helsinki’s Junatien metro bridge is set for a full replacement after decades of deterioration. The 1970s-built structure, which spans the gap between Kalasatama and Sörnäinen stations, will be rebuilt between 2026 and 2028 at a maximum cost of €107 million. Kreate Oy will serve as project management contractor.
Preparatory works are due to start in April or May 2026. The new bridge is designed to last at least 100 years.
The project will require metro services to be suspended for seven months from late spring 2027. During the closure, westbound trains will terminate at Hakaniemi, while eastbound services will run to Herttoniemi, where passengers can transfer to replacement buses. Kalasataman station will be closed for around 11 months in total. Including two months either side of the main disruption, during which trains will pass through without stopping.
Transport operator Kaupunkiliikenne plans to make full use of the shutdown, carrying out renovation works at Sörnäinen and Kulosaari stations as well as five other bridges in the affected area.
The bridge has been strengthened and supported multiple times over the years. A real-time structural monitoring system was installed in 2025. Authorities say the bridge remains safe for current users.
