A €1.1 billion AI data centre is coming to Borlänge, Sweden. Mistral AI and EcoDataCenter are partnering to strengthen European independence in artificial intelligence.
French AI company Mistral AI and Swedish operator EcoDataCenter will build a large-scale AI facility in Borlänge.
The investment of approximately 12.8 billion Swedish kronor (€1.1 billion) marks Mistral AI’s first infrastructure project outside France. It aims to strengthen European independence in artificial intelligence.
The facility is scheduled to become operational in 2027. It will enable development and deployment of Mistral AI’s next-generation AI models at scale.
The ambition is to create a fully European AI technology stack. All data will be processed and stored locally within Europe. This will be achieved by combining Mistral AI’s language models with EcoDataCenter’s sustainable infrastructure.
Arthur Mensch, CEO and co-founder of Mistral AI, says the investment is crucial for European competitiveness.
– This investment is a concrete step towards building independent AI capabilities in Europe. It lays the foundation for a European AI cloud that can meet the needs of industry, the public sector and research at scale, he says.
EcoDataCenter will handle design, construction and operation of the infrastructure. The facility will use renewable energy and advanced cooling technologies. It is designed to handle demanding AI workloads. The data centre will be equipped with Nvidia’s latest Vera Rubin GPUs.
– AI is critical infrastructure for Europe’s competitiveness, security and economic development. Together with Mistral AI, we’re building high-performance AI infrastructure on Swedish soil. Sustainability and European strategic autonomy are in focus. This investment strengthens Sweden’s position as a leading hub for advanced AI and digital infrastructure in Europe, says Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter.
