Miami airport's $9bn overhaul adds 17 gates

Miami International Airport is expanding Concourse D with 17 new full-size gates capable of handling larger aircraft. Construction breaks ground in 2027 and is scheduled for completion in 2030.

The project eliminates outdoor boarding and includes a new baggage handling system and direct access to US Customs and Border Protection for international arrivals. Each gate will also get its own dedicated boarding area.

American Airlines, which operates more than 60 percent of passenger traffic at the airport and runs around 400 daily departures, calls the project essential for sustained growth.

“D60 is a transformational project that will provide a much-improved experience for our customers and our team,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom.

The expansion forms part of Miami International Airport’s ten-year, $9 billion Modernization in Action Plan. The project targets LEED Silver and Envision Verified certifications.
