Meta is launching a new AI-focused business division. The company plans to build ten gigawatts of infrastructure over ten years.
Meta plans massive infrastructure investments over the coming decade. The tech giant has spent recent years betting big on virtual reality. Now, the company is pivoting hard toward artificial intelligence (AI) with substantial capital commitments in the sector.
Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company will construct ten gigawatts of AI infrastructure during the next ten years. The initiative falls under a newly created business unit called Meta Compute.
– The way we design, invest, and collaborate to build the infrastructure will give us a strategic advantage, Zuckerberg said in a statement.
The division will be headed by Santosh Janardhan, Meta’s global infrastructure chief, alongside Daniel Gross. Additionally, they will collaborate closely with Dina Powell McCormick, who recently joined Meta as president and vice chair.
– They will work with governments and states to build, deploy, invest in, and finance Meta’s infrastructure, Zuckerberg explained.
Digital infrastructure expansion has triggered a gold rush across the United States. Construction wages have skyrocketed in recent years as demand outpaces supply.
The market desperately needs qualified workers. Skilled labor has become increasingly scarce while tech companies race to build the most extensive infrastructure networks.
